10 Acne Myths You Should Forget About

We think we know about acne that we can replace what scientists have learned. Meanwhile, many myths continue to circulate and endure. To clarify some misconceptions about acne is what this article is concerned, and how to prevent and how to find the best cure for Acne should come after we clarify these misconceptions.

Myth 1. Acne affects only the appearance

Acne can also cause profound psychological scars. Severe acne can lead to low self-image and feeling depressed. There is a strong link between severe acne and social isolation (specially among young people).

Myth 2. Acne is caused by poor hygiene

While skin infections are associated with acne, lack of cleanliness is not the cause of the outbreak of acne. The combination of oil and dead skin cells is the cause of acne; it traps oil and bacteria under the skin surface, which is impossible to clean up easily. To minimize this, clean your skin with mild soap and water once or twice a day to keep your skin as healthy as possible. Avoid scrubing too hard as this can aggravate acne.

Myth 3. Acne is caused by specific foods

Chocolate always had a reputation as acne-inducing food. But, studies have shown no scientific evidence that this is true. The same goes for chips and sugary foods. There are foods that seem to exacerbate (not cause) the condition: milk and foods rich in iodine, such as seafood and some types of nuts for example.

Myth 4. Acne has to run its course

This should not be so as there are many acne treatments
available, which are tested and proven by dermatologist.

Myth 5. The best medicine for acne

Some people believe that if their acne worsens they should use more drugs. It is a bad idea because drugs can be dangerous if taken in large quantities (topical or oral). Excess use of acne ointments May only further irritate the skin.

Myth 6. Sunbathing is good for acne

The sun dries out the excess oil, it improves acne in the short term. However, sun exposure in the long-term run can do more harm than good, including worsening of acne. Worse, there is scientific evidence that exposure to the sun damages the skin and increases the risk of skin cancer.

Myth 7. Makeup causes acne

Some cosmetics can clog pores, which is bad for the health of your skin. But there are cosmetics called "noncomedogenic" or "nonacnegenic" that are safe to use. Some brands are made with ingredients to treat acne even.

Myth 8. Acne is a teenager problem

While most adolescents have acne, many adults too suffer the condition. Acne should clear for the first 20 years of your life. However, some people experience acne for the first time as late as 40 years old. And, for the most unfortunate of all, some people suffer acne outbreaks throughout their lives.

Myth 9. Acne is related to sex

Probably, we've all heard that too much sex or celibacy causes pimples. There's no proof of that! There is a link between sexual activity and hormone production, but the relationship between sex and the production of sebum (oily substance which combines with dead cells to cause acne) is not known. Stress and anger also affect hormone levels.

Myth 10. Popping grain is the best way to get rid of acne

The fact is that popping acne in any form may spread the infection in the skin that can exacerbate the spread of bacteria that is causes it.

How to Remove Acne Scars Yourself

Removing acne scars has always been a curiosity to those affected by them, and often the only thing that prevents us from following through with a treatment is the information available to us and the cost. This article will go over the ways of how to remove acne scars.

Dermatologists can remove acne scars by several means, ranging from surgeries, laser therapies, injections, and Dermabrasion. These methods, while quite effective, are also quite costly, and are often not covered by insurance providers. They also affect your body differently, as some of the treatments remove the top layer of the targeted area, while the others encourage collagen levels and decrease melanin levels. Collagen is one of the key molecules for skin flexibility, while melanin is what causes pigmentation of the skin.

The take home treatments include topical treatments, and orally taken medications or herbal supplements. Most topical treatments only help moisturize and clean the skin, but do not help in preventing future breakouts. Orally taken medications often do the same, and fail in treating the acne scars. Herbal supplements boast ingredients that will help your bodies healing process, but are often ineffective, as acne scars are the result of your body's natural healing process. Whenever using a take home method, it is important to understand how it works. A product that works on both fronts is often more effective then a single usage method. Products such as Zenmed© provide healthier alternatives.

When trying to find the product that will work best for you, make sure you do your research. If a product does not offer a money back guarantee or provides you with an acceptable amount of testimonials, it might not be for you. Asking your doctor's opinion about a product is also a great way to find if it is a reputable product or a placebo.

Does Microdermabrasion Help Acne Scars?

Microdermabrasion is when tiny particles are applied to an area to remove the top layer of skin. By doing so a new layer of skin grows to replace the old, and often has a healthier appearance.

Microdermabrasion can be done by a professional Dermatologist in their office, and often only takes one to three sessions, depending on the degree of scarring. The Dermatologist will either braise the skin with crystals or a type of wire brush, and then use a vacuum tube to suck away the crystals and or dead skin cells. The treatment often costs upto $1500.00 dollars, and while effective, makes one wonder about take home versions of Microdermabrasion treatments.

For starters, do not buy a device for personal Microdermabrasion use. These devices, while not complicated, if used incorrectly, will seriously further the damage, and possibly create new scars that will not be removable by the device. These devices should only be used by a licensed professional.

Get rid of acne fast

Take home methods of Microdermabrasion that are safe are topical treatments that have course particles in them, and require you to "work in", or massage the ointment to the scarred tissue. The course particles will create cuts in the scars, and cause a new layer of skin to grow, such as in the professional methods. These treatments effectiveness vary on the product, and means of application. Some people buy a product that has strong moisturizers within the formula, and while this helps quicken the healing process, it also reduces the strength of the top layer of skin via a strong acid or base, giving a second unlisted effect of a chemical peel. This treatment is also difficult to use on a single scar.

Some companies such as Zenmed suggest an alternate means. By using a topical treatment that helps the skin restore moisture and to heal rapidly, and via a second part to the product, that affects the deeper layers of skin.
